That First Home Project as a Couple

Any homeowner who has a significant other can tell you a story about that first home project together. It might be funny now, but chances are it wasn’t all too funny then. Mine dealt with painting. Lots of painting. Did I mention I hate painting?

Recently I came across a great modern tale of a newlywed couple who embarked on quite an interesting first home project. Danielle and Eric Wilson (full disclosure: I’ve known Danielle since she was born. Yes, I’m getting old…ish) were just married on December 28, 2012. I remember this because I was there and also it’s the same anniversary as my wife and me. I digress…so here you have a newly married couple just starting to make their own home together.

But these aren’t the 1900′s. This is a tale for a new millennium. So where should any Internet-age first home project start? Pinterest, of course. Turns out Danielle keeps a board of things that she would love to have for her home. Pinterest is perfect for that, but of course what you desire doesn’t always match what you can afford. That didn’t stop the Wilsons. Danielle found a coffee table she loved, but it didn’t quite fit the dimensions they were looking for and it was a bit more expensive than what they wanted to spend.

So for their first newlywed home project, Danielle and Eric built a coffee table together.

Now Eric is an engineer so they had that going for them, but don’t think this was a one-sided project. Danielle jumped right in there, electric drill and power sander in hand, to make an unique and memorable piece of home that is sure to last for generations.

That’s a great first home project.

Danielle has all the details of how they went about picking the table, building it, finishing it, etc. on her blog so you can read the full rundown there. The final product is amazing, and it was even better than the original table found on Pinterest because it was the exact size they needed for their space. Plus it only cost them a little under $75 to make.

But the cost isn’t the important thing here. It’s the fact that this new home they’ve created already has a story that will be told for years to come. Great memories are being made and isn’t that what’s so fun about making a house a home?

The Ultimate House According to Pinterest

One of the fun parts of Pinterest is the ability users get to dream big.

Let’s be serious…if Pinterest were real life, we would all be dressed in designer clothing, cook like Giada De Laurentiis, plan a royal wedding like Kate and William, have a home that looked like Martha Stewart decorated it and still have enough time in the day to complete even one DIY project that has been on our list of things to try since the spring.

But that’s what makes Pinterest so unique. It’s the place to be for dreamers, and dreaming of a perfect home is something that millions do everyday regardless of whether they are pinning their dreams on Pinterest or not. So we wondered…if we took the most repinned photos from our boards what would the ultimate house actually look like?

“Pinspiration” for Your Dream Home

Pinterest has become one of the hottest social platforms in 2012. It is a place for consumers, brands, bloggers and even celebrities to enjoy joint content curation. Users enjoy creating boards for various topics which often include interior design, party planning, style finds, tasty recipes and much more!

I discovered Pinterest seven months ago. As I started using it I was brought back to my middle school days of spending hours looking through my mom’s magazines cutting out inspiration for outfits and typography that would eventually be included in a massive collage on one of the walls in my bedroom. I quickly realized that this was a more organized and grown up version of the posters I had made as a teen. After hours of pinning decor ideas, beautiful pieces of furniture and amazing elements I would love to have in my home, I realized just how perfect Pinterest is for dreaming of my future home or finding inspirations to update my existing one.

Pinterest is a place to share beautiful photos and lifestyle stories in a scrap-booking format and I personally have made it my place to organize the dreams I have for my ideal home. Some of my pins are realistic and some are a bit far fetched. (pinning them for when I hit the lotto one day..a girl can dream right?) This is part of what makes Pinterest so fun!
